A Name that Tells a Story - Pt 2, No 3, 2007


1. Find the meanings of these words from the story.
loop -  A curve or circle.
persuade - To make someone do something, by telling them reasons why they should do it.
desperate -  If you are desperate, you will do anything to change your situation.
current -  The movement of water in a river.
lifeless - Lifeless is when something is dead.

2. Draw the incident that happened at the river.
3. Answer these comprehension questions to show your understanding of the text.
a) Where were the boys playing? The boys were playing by the river.
b) Why do you think the boys pushed Te Whanaupani into the water?
The boys pushed Te Whanaupani because he was going to tell Mama on them and then the said I don’t care.
c) What happened to Te Whanaupani? Te Whanaupani swallowed the water from the river.
d) Why was Haumu giving her mokopuna to Mama?
Haumu was giving her mokopuna to Mama because she thought Te Whanaupani had died in the river.
